INDIA’S EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTER CALLS FOR UNBIASED RESPONSE TO “ TERRORISM,EXTREMISM AND VIOLENCE”

With the ongoing diplomatic tension between India and Canada, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar responses to “ terrorism, extremism, and violence” should not be influenced by political convenience. He also stated that one cannot selectively apply principles such as respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs, “cannot be exercises in cherry-picking”.

“…Nor must we countenance that political convenience determines responses to terrorism, extremism and violence. Similarly, respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs cannot be exercises in cherry-picking. When reality departs from rhetoric, we must have the courage to call it out…,” said S. Jaishankar.

He emphasized that the era where a few nations dictated the global agenda has come to an end, also highlighting the importance of a “rule-based” global order. “In our deliberations, we often advocate the promotion of a rules-based order. From time to time, respect for the UN Charter is also involved. But for all the talk, it is still a few nations who shape the agenda and seek to define the norms. This can’t go on indefinitely nor will it go unchallenged,” he further added.

The Minister added that with collective effort, a fair equitable and democratic order can certainly be established. He also stated that India, transitioning from the era of non-alignment, now embraces the era of “ Vishwa Mitra” and aims to foster collaboration with the wide array of partners.
