The Kolkata Police has prohibited all personnel from using earphones or headphones while on duty, warning that any violation will invite strict disciplinary action.
A senior Kolkata Police officer said on Sunday that the directive has been circulated to all police stations under the city’s jurisdiction, senior officers have been instructed to ensure its strict implementation.
The decision comes after reports that some police personnel were found distracted by their mobile phones while on duty. Although the use of mobile phones during official duty was already restricted, authorities observed that some personnel continued to watch videos or listen to music using earphones, affecting their alertness & ability to respond promptly to incidents.
Police Commissioner Ajay Nand has directed that no officer or personnel will be allowed to use headphones or earphones while performing official duties. The order was issued to police stations on Saturday night, and officials have made it clear that anyone violating the directive will face strict disciplinary action.
The order is part of the state government’s broader initiative to strengthen discipline,improve operational efficiency & ensure faster responses to emergencies. Police authorities have also intensified monitoring to prevent negligence & enhance public safety.
Earlier, the Kolkata Police had issued another directive barring personnel from performing official duties in plain clothes, except those attached to designated specialised units.
Last month ie; in June, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasised the need to modernise and strengthen the police force while encouraging personnel to maintain physical fitness. He also announced plans to recruit around 20,000 additional police personnel across West Bengal over the next six months to one year.
Since, the BJP government assumed office in April 2026, the state administration has introduced a series of measures aimed at reorganising and reforming the police system. The latest order banning the use of earphones on duty is being viewed as another step towards improving discipline, accountability, and professionalism within the force.∆
