Indian tech company Zoho Corporation has taken a significant leap in the instant messaging space by adding Android TV support to its homegrown chat platform, Arattai — a feature that even global giant WhatsApp has yet to introduce.
The new update allows users to access their Arattai chats, media, and calls directly on Android TV devices, marking a first-of-its-kind move among major messaging platforms. With this launch, Zoho aims to bring a more seamless, multi-device experience to Indian users, especially those who rely heavily on television screens for digital communication and entertainment.
Aiming for Wider Accessibility.
Arattai — which means “chat” in Tamil — was developed by Zoho as a secure, privacy-focused alternative to global messaging apps. The platform is designed to work efficiently even on low-end smartphones and weak internet connections, making it ideal for users in semi-urban and rural areas.
According to Zoho, the app consumes minimal data and performs smoothly even in low-bandwidth environments. This optimization, combined with its privacy-first approach, could make Arattai a strong contender in the competitive messaging ecosystem dominated by WhatsApp and Telegram.
Feature Highlights
Android TV App: First Indian messaging app to natively support Android TV.
Lightweight Design: Optimized for low storage and limited connectivity.
Full Messaging Suite: Offers text, voice, video calls, file sharing, and group chats.
Made in India: Built by Zoho, a Chennai-headquartered tech firm known for enterprise software.
Why It Matters
With over 400 million WhatsApp users in India, the messaging market is highly competitive. However, Arattai’s new feature could give it an edge among users looking for multi-device flexibility and localized innovation.
The Android TV version also opens doors for family or group communication in shared spaces — something current mobile-only messaging apps do not fully support.
Future Roadmap.
Zoho has hinted that more integrations and features are in development to enhance the Arattai experience. While WhatsApp continues to expand its multi-device capabilities, it has not yet rolled out an Android TV version. If Arattai succeeds in scaling this feature, it could redefine how Indians use messaging apps across devices — and signal that innovation in chat platforms is no longer limited to Silicon Valley.
