Kolkata | November 2, 2025:
Former television actor Rupa Dutta has once again found herself in legal trouble. The 42-year-old actress, known for her appearance in the Hindi TV serial ‘Jai Maa Vaishnodevi’ and a few Bengali films, was arrested by the Kolkata Police’s Detective Department for allegedly stealing a woman’s purse containing gold jewellery and cash.
Incident Details:
According to police sources, the theft took place on October 15 in the Adi Bashtala Lane area under Posta Police Station. The victim, identified as Dipa Agarwal, reported that her purse — which contained gold ornaments and cash — went missing within minutes.
The stolen items included:
A gold mangalsutra weighing around 20 grams
A gold chain with Vaishno Devi locket (approx. 21 grams)

₹4,000 in cash
Police launched an investigation using CCTV footage and technical surveillance, which led them to Rupa Dutta.
Arrest and Recovery:
Detectives later arrested her from Nandaram Market in Burrabazar. A subsequent search of her Garcha Road residence led to the recovery of gold jewellery weighing around 63 grams.
Officials confirmed that she was produced before a city court and has been remanded to police custody till November 7 for further interrogation.
Repeat Offender:
This is not the first time Dutta has been caught in such an act. In 2022, she was arrested at the Kolkata International Book Fair for allegedly pickpocketing. She was caught after throwing a stolen wallet into a dustbin — an incident that made national headlines at the time.
Police Statement:
A senior officer said, “She used to target crowded areas and act swiftly before the victim could notice anything. We are investigating whether she is part of a larger group involved in similar thefts.”
Background:

Once a familiar face on television, Rupa Dutta’s repeated involvement in petty theft cases has shocked many in the entertainment industry. Police are now examining her past movements to determine if she was involved in other unsolved thefts across the city.
