Mild tremors were felt in Kolkata, Howrah, & parts of West Bengal for a few seconds around 9:10 PM, causing brief panic among residents.
According to preliminary reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was in Myanmar, where the tremor measured 6.0 on the Richter scale. The impact of the quake was felt beyond borders, with reports also coming in from Bangladesh and Indonesia.
It is noteworthy that last year too, Kolkata and large parts of eastern India experienced tremors twice. In January 2025, a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Lobuche, about 90 km northeast of Gokarneshwar in Nepal, the impact of which was felt in several areas of Bihar, including Madhubani, as well as in Bangladesh, China, and Bhutan.
